You know you’re supposed to trust your gut. But how do you know if that visceral gut feeling is your fear or your truth talking?
It can be hard to tell. Which is why I created this quick checklist of qualities to help you determine which voice is talking and what your gut is truly trying to say.
For example, let’s say you’re trying to decide to leave your job or stay in it. You’re miserable and know you’re meant for more but you don’t want to give up the safety of a paycheck.
Is the visceral feeling in your gut a sign to stay put or an indication it’s time to get out?
To understand this, it’s important for us to talk physiology for a moment.
You’ve heard about the acute stress response that happens when you encounter something frightening.
Your body floods with adrenaline and cortisol, your heart rate speeds up, your muscles tense, and your body prepares to fight (resist), flee (run and hide) or freeze (get paralyzed).
This chemical surge is what creates that visceral feeling in your gut, as all the sensory nerves in your gut respond to the stressful situation.
We need this response to survive. But if the fear is flaring because you’re thinking of leaving your job, and not because you’re being chased by a bear, then how do you know what to do?
It’s easy to feel confused and overwhelmed when your body is flooding with stress hormones and your survival instinct is telling you to resist it or run and hide.
Here’s what I do. I ask myself:
If I was infinitely safe, utterly protected, totally provided for and knew I couldn’t fail, what would I do?
This question always aligns me with my true destiny, instead of keeping me stuck in my story.
Most women I speak with do hear their truth via their gut instinct.
But the implications of that truth are so overwhelming that it frightens them and so they fall into the acute stress responses of resisting it, running and hiding from it or just getting totally paralyzed and doing nothing.
That’s when the voice of “reason, logic and justification” (i.e. your fear voice) starts chiming in loudly and you rationalize to yourself why it just doesn’t make sense to follow your gut right now.
You go back to the life you know and think you’ve dodged a bullet. Your system floods with relief and you tell yourself that you have done the right thing.
Only what you’ve just done is create internal incongruence.
Your head, heart and gut are now in discord.
That gut truth hasn’t gone away. All you’ve done is smooth over it with the story you’re telling yourself. Now, if you want to continue not listening to your gut truth, you’ll have to create louder and louder distractions to blot it out.
This is how addiction, obsession and self sabotage can cycle back in.
Addiction, obsession and self sabotage not only distracts us from that voice of truth inside, but they also numb us from the growing discomfort and dis-ease that comes when you’re living incongruently.
So if you’re in this cycle of fear or distraction, then what do you do?
Firstly, you need to honor your gut feeling for what it is. (You can click right here and find out the 16 qualities to determine if its your fear voice or your truth voice talking).
Next you need to take congruent action.
Congruent action means that your head, heart and gut are all on the same team. It means you know your truth, and in spite of the pounding heart, sweaty palms and the fact you want to PUKE, you take decisive action in the direction of your dream.
What happens on the other side of you taking this bold step is is nothing short of a miracle.
The moment you stretch beyond what’s safe and into the unknown, you are swept up by the Universe and held and supported in ways you could never imagine. Resources show up, mentors appear. Everything lines up to usher you towards your destiny.
That’s not to say that the path of truth is painted with sunshine and butterflies all the time. It will certainly push your limits.
But that’s why you’re not meant to walk it alone.
If you know you’re ready to step outside your story, truth your gut and take decisive action in alignment with your destiny, then firstly, congratulations! The people you’re here to help are waiting for you. It’s time.
Secondly, get connected so you have the support you need along the way.
